3 Word Challenge – VMworld Reception and Monday Night Tweetup

So, you think you are good at Twitter? You’ve figured out how to say everything you want in 140 characters? Then in the spirit of keeping “the cloud in your head” while at VMworld 2009 join me in The VMworld3Word Challenge.

That’s right, keep all your tweets during the VMworld Welcome Reception and the Monday Night Tweetup to just three words. Be sure to include the hashtag #vmworld3word at the end.

I’ve got another live Tweetgrid queued up after this post’s page break for all that are up to it.

Impossible you say?

No can do?

Not very fun?

Don’t be ridiculous!

Tag. You’re it!

VMworld 2009 Extravaganza at the Thirsty Bear

Hello from the Thirsty Bear in San Francisco!

I am (will be) reporting on the goings on at the Sunday Night Warm Up Extravaganza via Twitter, and with some luck I’ll have enough phone battery to send regular updates and twitpics throughout the whole event.

Enjoy! The live Tweetgrid can be found after the page break.

updated 08.31.09 –

I filtered the Tweetgrid down to just rbrambley #xtrav tweets. (Hey, it’s my blog!) To see all tweets from last night go here (tweetgrid – last 100 tweets) or here (search.twitter.com).

Hello Travel To VMworld

ScreenshotSince I am traveling to San Francisco, CA for VMworld today I thought I would dedicate a post and a Tweetgrid to the journey. In keeping with VMworld’s “Hello” theme I am aggregating tweets via the hashtag #hello.

Tweetgrid updates usually within 10 seconds. To join in the fun just add the hashtag to your tweet.

I’ll add more to this post as my travels allow, but for now enjoy the conversation!

updated 08.30.09 -

The flight went great and I am in San Francisco! I wish everyone traveling yesterday could have said the same.

I modified the Tweetgrid format show that it shows up only on the full post after the page break. Seems I could not figure out how to make multiple Tweetgrids with different keywords co-exist peacefully on the VM /ETC home page. Not as cool looking in my opinion, but just as effective.

Be sure to click through to see my twitter reports from yesterday. The picture of @jtroyer doing his best Vanna White modeling my UGH shirt and @jasonboche’s vCalendar is worth a look by itself!

UPDATED: VMETC Test Tweetgrid For VMworld

VM /ETC readers have most likely figured out by now that I will be incorporating a live Tweetgrid into my VMworld 2009 posts this year. I’m hoping the ease of tweeting and the magic of hastags will provide a unique, live angle to my coverage. For my RSS readers – from what I’ve seen so far in my testing you will have to follow the links to the post on my site to see the tweets.

I’m still planning on the normal live blogging while at keynotes, sessions, briefings, etc., but wifi access and power for my notebook have been more “miss than hit” at past conferences where cellular signal has seemed to be more consistent. We’ll see.

As always I am open for feedback and suggestions. Please leave a comment or contact me via the info on my About page.

I am looking forward to the show, and can’t wait to see everyone in San Francisco!

Hello VMworld 2009 Infrastructure – Cisco UCS and EMC V-Max

vmworld 2009 datacenter at escalatorsOn the Virtual Geek Blog, Chad published some early photos of the server infrastructure in use for VMworld 2009.

VMworld – V-Max – powered up and ready to go!

Chad’s post title indicates the VMworld 2009 datacenters are using EMC’s Symmetrix V-Max for storage.

On Run-Virtual.com, Richard provides some additional details about the VMworld servers:

At least 512 Cisco UCS blades at VMworld 2009!

“This year there will be 3 ‘datacenters’ at the event where VMware is placing all its kit to support all the hands-on labs, email stations, booths, etc. The biggest datacenter is showing 16 Racks with each 4 Cisco UCS blade chasis, with each 8 blades = 512 Blades! WOW!!”

Keep An Eye On The Microsoft Virtualization Team at VMworld

The Microsoft Virtualization Team wants you to follow them while they are at VMworld 2009 next week in San Francisco, CA. The post Update: What you won’t see at VMworld 2009 not only explains the booth exhibit and sets the record straight on what Microsoft will be doing, but it also introduces the MS virtualization experts that will be tweeting from the conference at and around the Moscone Center next week.

“So we’ll have Microsoft virtualization experts in the booth. These experts will be there to answer your questions. They’ll also be Tweeting about their experiences and impressions as they talk to customers and attend sessions. I encourage you to follow them on Twitter –  see the table below for their usernames.

Interestingly enough, the Microsoft booth will be right next to the Blogger Lounge on the Solutions Exchange floor (exhibit hall).

As I usually like to do when following the social networking at a large event, I’ve created a custom Tweetgrid with all of the twitternames in the table above so I can easily keep an eye on the Microsoft team and follow thier reactions to the conference happeningsVMworld 2009 Microsoft Virtualization Team Tweetgrid

For those that don’t already know, Tweetgrid is a web page Twitter client that allows anyone to follow Twitter users. You don’t even need a Twitter account. I used the 1 x 10 Tweetgrid column format, so be sure to scroll right to see all of the tweets! Bookmark the link or this post to join me in keeping an eye on Microsoft at VMworld.

Get To VMworld 2009 Early – Sunday and Monday Stuff

Even though VMworld 2009 doesn’t officially start until Tues 9/1 there is still plenty to do for early arrivers. I’ll be getting to San Francisco early so I thought I’d pass along a couple of events on both Sunday and Monday that I am looking forward to.

Sunday Night 8/30/09

Theron Conrey has been the mastermind of the VMworldUnderground get together for the last 2 years, and he is raising the bar with this year’s VMworld 2009 Sunday Night Warm Up Extravaganza at the Thirsty Bear in San Francisco.

“This year we’re looking to break the mold. I’ve enlisted a crack team of party planners to help me get this under control. We also have a fantastic group of vendor sponsors pitching in to put this over the top. Head over to our main page for all the details.

Same simple rule as last year:

Technology talk and networking with your peers is strongly encouraged, however if you’re talking about a product you sell, you’re buying drinks (sponsoring vendors excluded of course), We will hear no excuses (seriously, we’ve worked out a deal for you to work it off in the kitchen). Vendor engineers are excluded from this rule again this year as they tend to be extremely funny after a few pints, and can’t help themselves.”

Theron is asking for RSVPs in the form of replies to the event thread at VMworld.com (linked above). Leave a reply and also enter yourself in a drawing for the giveaways. Leave your response in the form of a limerick and recieve 2 entries for your effort. I think I read that the best limerick also wins a prize, and I’m so proud of mine I had to write it again here on VM /ETC.

vExpert, VCP, and vSphere.
VMworld soon will be here.
Sunday before bed
Put the cloud in your head.
Meet me at the Thirsty Bear for a vBeer!

I will be fashionably late Sunday due to meetings, but will definitely be there.

Monday 8/31/09

After Sunday night some may have to create “thin provisioned, linked clones” of themselves for Monday morning, but for those that get it together the technical content starts early and is worth the attendance.

If you are a VMware Partner you have the traditional partner content to look forward to, but this year VMware has turned Monday into a VMware Technology Exchange Developer Day as well.

Nava Davuluri explains the event on the VMware Communities Developer Day page and blog:
