Consolidate Helper Snapshot Appears On vSphere VM

Your vSphere VMs may be running from snapshots even though you didn’t create them. That is, if a scheduled job which auto creates snapshots runs into a datastore with insufficient free space. In this scenario a special Consolidate Helper snapshot will be created

The following screenshot shows the mysterious snapshot as I found it on my lab domain controller

image

In my case, the scheduled job that needs to create and then normally commit the snapshot is a Veeam Backup and Replication job. At some point in the life of my lab I did run out of space, and although it’s not an issue anymore, the snapshot still exists even when the jobs aren’t running! I was a bit surprised that backup jobs could even complete with this snapshot in place.

VMware KB article 1003302 explains that the Consolidate Helper snapshot is actually created when trying to commit (delete all) a snapshot.

Free P2V Tool From Paragon For VMware, Virtual PC, and VirtualBox

I happened to find the Paragon Go Virtual free P2V migration tool when trying to find a disk image back up tool for my notebook. This free tool is designed for desktops only and only works with the following OSes:

  • Windows 7 (32/64-bit)
  • Windows Vista (32/64-bit)
  • Windows XP (32/64-bit)
  • Windows 2000 Professional

Here are some self described key features per the web site:

“Full Windows OS Support - Guaranteed support for any Windows operating system since Win2K (excluding server editions).

P2V Migration - Migrate a physical system to a virtual environment by converting all installed software and data into a virtual disk of the required virtual machine.

Migration without rebooting Windows - Hot processing of locked (in-use) hard disks lets you migrate a computer without rebooting and interrupting Windows.

P2V Adjust OS to recover the startup ability after unsuccessful virtualization with a 3rd party tool and to make Windows Vista/7 backups bootable on virtual hardware.

Smart Driver Injector - Makes the process of adding new drivers smooth and easy.

Performance – Paragon Go Virtual performs approximately 20% faster (your results may vary).

P2V adjust OS – Freeware tools will not adjust the OS to virtual hardware, leaving the user unable to boot their virtual machine. Go Virtual adjusts the OS so the virtual machine will boot successfully.

Selection of virtual hardware – Go Virtual offers the user a selection of virtual hardware types. Freeware tools typically do not.

Migration of offline systems - Freeware tools support the migration of operating systems currently running, but they have problems migrating offline operating systems, especially when there are more than one OS on the disk. Go Virtual performs these operations with ease.”

Live Coverage From TechEd 2010 – Travel Day

Map picture

I’m headed to New Orleans, LA for Microsoft TechEd 2010 the first half of the week. I’m there to work the Veeam booth and help show how companies can manage VMware infrastructure with Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager using the nworks Management Pack. I’m not sure whether I’ll get to attend the keynotes or any sessions, but I’ll do my best to cover the virtualization news and Cloud buzz in the Ernest N Morial Convention Center as I experience it.

I’ve decided to use Cover It Live to hopefully help me provide more real time, live and mobile coverage as the conference unfolds. The embedded event player at the end of this post will be collecting all my tweets (@rbrambley) as I travel today when I include the #teched hashtag. I’ll log into the event broadcast console from time to time too. I’ll be sure to announce/tweet when I’m live so join me by adding comments and live interaction during those times.

I previously used Cover it Live to live blog from HP’s Blade Day Event in Houston, TX. I really like that all the tweets, comments, and coverage are recorded for full playback in the future (see the results at the link provided).

I’m still learning how to take full advantage of Cover It Live when covering an event, so thanks Microsoft for allowing me to practice so more with TechEd 2010, and, of course, thanks Veeam for sending me to New Orleans!

Where vExpert 2010 Ranks For Me

Along with others yesterday, I received email notice from VMware’s @jtroyer that I was designated a vExpert for 2010. I was thrilled to win the award in 2009, VMware’s inaugural year of the program, and I’m just as thrilled to be named again this year. But being named a vExpert is now more to me than just winning an award. It’s a virtualization community honor with a responsibility.

First, let’s be honest.

vExpert is not a certification. VCDX is the badge for the VMware technically elite. Those that have endured the study, passed the tests, and triumphed in the design defense have earned the rare status of true VMware guru. There are many VCDXs that are also vExperts, but do not confuse the two. A vExpert should always stand at attention, salute, and then listen closely when a VCDX enters the room and speaks. They are the battle proven Generals. They’ve walked the walk.

Second, let’s be real.

Not all VCDXs are vExperts today, and I would suspect that as more are certified the ratio of VCDXs that will not get recognized for community contributions will rise. That’s not a negative. Let’s call this the “Epping Curse”. For example, when you are that good you end up working for VMware and you can’t win the vExpert award. It’s a problem to have in my opinion. Then there will always be some VCDXs who do not contribute to the community at all. Nothing wrong with that either.

Third, let’s recognize the effort and the honor.
