3PAR Autonomic Groups: Mundane VMware Storage Provsioning and Mismatched Socks
Take a 9 minute drive around the storage block with Marc Farley of 3PAR as he uses an analogy of mismatched socks to explain how Autonomic Storage can eliminate human error in storage provisioning for virtual servers and databases. In the beginning of the video Marc goes off on a tangent Twitter rant where you might recognize some twitternames mentioned.
It’s worth the ride!
3PAR was one of the sponsors during the GestaltIT Tech Field Day in San Jose, CA last week, and announced Autonomic Provisioning with the press release titled 3PAR Changes the Way Utility Storage is Provisioned for Virtual Server and Database Environments
Check out Marc’s StorageRap blog and all of his Steering Wheel Camera videos on YouTube. The episode where he gives fellow storage bloggers Dave Graham (EMC) and Stephen Foskett (Nirvanix) a ride to the San Francisco airport on the last day of VMworld 2009 may also be interesting to VM /ETC readers.

The Magic of Citrix XenDesktop is Ardence (Provisioning Server)
Building on my previous post about the XenDesktop Hands On Lab training I attended last week, this post is dedicated to the real magic of Citrix XenDesktop. Ardence, a software streaming solution aquired by Citrix in December of 2006, is now Citrix Provisioning Server for Desktops with the amazing ability to deliver desktops from a single disk image. Provisioning Server, coupled with the Desktop Delivery Controller as the VDI Connection Broker, delivers complete Microsoft Windows, SUSE Linux, and Red Hat Linux operating systems images from networked storage. These OS images are quickly brokered to bare metal user’s desktops at Active Directory Domain log on. With VDI, the bare metal desktop happens to be the virtual hardware of virtual machines hosted on either XenServer, ESX Server, or Windows 2008 Server Hyper-V.
The Provisioning Server home page (linked above) explains the advantages achieved with the Ardence technology. Read the rest of this entry »
Minority Report: Multi-touch features in Windows 7
Remember the movie Minority Report? It starred Tom Cruise as the leader of a “pre-crime” police unit in the future that was responsible for stopping murders before they happened. Pyschics known as “The Precogs” were able to see visions of murders that were about to happen, and images from those visions appeared on a big glass screen. Mr. Cruise could manipulate these images with his hands in order to figure out where and when the crime would take place so he could prevent the killings.
I’m testing your memory because I received the latest WServerNews email the other day and learned that Microsoft demonstrated the new Multi-Touch features that will be part of their next version, currently named Windows 7. Check out this video of the demo. Read the rest of this entry »
Things that make you go hmmmm – April 25, 2008
This weeks edition is centered on the topic of quick migration versus VMware HA and VMotion. We start with a post from the Windows Virtualization Team’s blog site and then explore some responses from a couple popular blogs in the virtualization community. Finally, if you have not seen Microsoft’s Quick Migration in action then check out the video at the end of this post. Links to the full posts are provided by clicking the section titles. Enjoy!
VMware Lab Manager Flash Demo
Looking for an explanation of virtual lab automation and VMware Lab Manager, and better yet, to get a feel for the workflow of creating VM templates and allowing developers and users access to those templates via a web browser? Although the Lab Manager web page provides a wealth of knowledge about virtual lab automation (VLA) and product information, the best quick demonstration I’ve seen is VMware’s Camtasia Studio video. Check out the link for a 5 min overview and demonstration for how Lab Manager allows administrators to provision a Dev and Test environment quickly and easily.
Look, I can virtualize. I’m using two stools at once.
The Lone Server is a funny video found on YouTube about a Windows 2003 Server that has realized his prime has passed. He ends up in a bar ordering drinks from Windows 2000 Server. The two discuss how they can no longer hang with the young and quick Server 2008 crowd. While discussing some of the Server 2008 features virtualization is mentioned and Server 2003 stands up and leans against two bar stools and proclaims “Look, I can virtualize. I am using two stools at once.” Finally, a young, hot Server 2008 walks by and Server 2003 tries to impress her by bragging about having the latest virus definitions. To Server 2003’s dismay, her reply is “Call me when you upgrade.”

Thursday 9.13.07 Keynote – what I missed :(
Unfortunately I slept late Thursday morning. Waking up at 7:30 am in Hayward, CA meant that there was no way short of a helicopter I was going to make it to San Francisco before 9. I’m pretty sure my company would not let me expense a helicopter so I decided to catch up on some email from the hotel until traffic burned off. I also had “Smash Head” from the party Weds night!
blog.scottlowe.org has some great notes on this session. Here’s my thoughts on what I missed. Read the rest of this entry »
