Create a virtual SAN using ESX local storage ?!!
So, I woke up this morning to an email from the President of my company about LeftHand Network’s new virtual appliance. I wrote about this briefly yesterday.
From the email:
LeftHand Readies “Unique” Virtual SANs

LeftHand Networks claims that it is poised to both halve the cost of providing HA protection for VMware servers, and free stranded disk space in those platforms, by creating a virtual SAN inside VMware ESX clusters.
In the next quarter the company will ship a version of its SAN/iQ clustered and virtualized storage software that can run on a VMware virtual server — delivered as a virtual appliance.
That means that LeftHand will be trailing a raft of other suppliers such as FalconStor and DataCore, which have already ported their storage virtualization software from physical servers to VMware-hosted virtual servers.
Now I am definitely checking this out ASAP!!
Giants Game
When I left Barry Bonds had a double and a walk. It was interesting to listen to the fans around me when Bonds is at bat compared to when he is in the field. During his at bats they all cheer him and boo the opposing pitcher if he doesn’t throw strikes. When Barry is in Left Field the fans all seen to hold their breathe when the ball goes his way. A few times Bonds had to chase the ball into the corner or the gap and, when he casually loped after the ball, the fans screamed “run Barry!” with some frustration. Although the San Francisco fans have obviously enjoyed the home run record I bet they won’t be too disappointed when Bonds retires for good.
I created a Photos Page where you can watch photo slide shows from today. I’ll keep updating this page throughout the week.
Thoughts so far
Partner Day seems way more crowded this year. I guess it’s a problem VMware wants to have because it is a symptom of success, but my morning as an attendee has been unpleasant. Personally I have had the following problems:
- Finding parking was tough
- The registration area was very compact and the process was slower than expected.
- The Marriott feels warm – this may be petty, but with this many people this safternoon may get worse !!
- I could not get in the General Session. I was late because I had to take a conference call. When I got to the General Session I was told the auditorium was full and to go
to an “overflow” room where there was a simulcast. When I saw that was full too I gave up. I went outside and took a break.
I also know that many people had registration problems. There was a special line for “handling problems”. One of my co-workers’ was told he was not registered, but he got it straightened out – except he can’t eat the conference lunch or got to the partner reception tonight.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: my trip to San Francisco
Well, I made it to San Francisco last night. Here’s a summary of my trip:
The Good:
I watched Ocean’s Thirteen on the flight. I’ve enjoyed all of the “Oceans” movies so far and this one was good as well.
My Sprint Mobile Broadband Card – this is card worth every penny. (see “The Ugly” section for why)
The Bad:
It’s a 5 hour flight! Nothing is worse then rubbing elbows with the stranger next to you while the stranger in front of you reclines in your lap. C’mon airlines, either remove the reclining ability of seats and/or spread out the passengers. Go ahead, charge us another $50 per seat to make up the difference from the reduced number of seats per flight! We’ll all be happier in the end!
The Ugly:
Turns out I did not have a reservation at the San Francisco Marriott. My company made the reservations for me (supposedly) months ago. When they never sent me an itinerary with the hotel info on it I questioned it and was told that multiple rooms were under another employee’s name. My bad for never confirming directly with the hotel before arriving. I had to scramble at the SFO airport baggage claim to find a hotel and rental car for the week.
Good thing I had the Sprint Broadband card. I was able to sit down and get to the internet right at the airport!
So, I am staying at the Fairfield Inn in Hayward, CA on the Oakland side of the Bay. I think I will get to cross the Golden Gate Bridge this morning on the way to the Moscone Center!
Ready to Go!
I am leaving for San Francisco on Sunday at 4:45 pm and arrive at 6:15-ish. With the coast to coast trip that really means 5 hrs in the air and another 3+ hrs traveling between airports.
I am looking forward to being in San Fran for my first time, and hopefully I will have time to “see the sights”. I plan on bringing a camera and uploading some photos to this blog. So, check back often!
