New CVSP Certification from Catbird for Virtual Security
Catbird, makers of the V-Security solution for VMware, has announced a new virtual infrastructure security certification. The CVSP certification is designed to train individuals with skills necessary to assess virtual infrastructure for security risks and compliance. A description of the program is found in the Computer Technology Review article Catbird announces Certified Virtual Security Professional Program.
“The CVSP program is designed to enable security engineers, along with IT audit and compliance professionals, to conduct security assessments and implement virtual infrastructure security measures to
maintain compliance with regulatory and internal standards. Graduates of the course will have the ability to analyze the efficacy of their existing virtual security protocols, as well as the know-how to take proactive measures to enhance their existing security.Upon completion of the CVSP program, students are eligible to sit for the CVSP certification exam, consisting of a practice deployment and a multiple choice test. A background in VMware ESX Server 3.x, Virtual Center 2.x, Linux networking, and network security concepts is recommended for participants, as is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification.”

Microsoft Announces MCTS Certification for Hyper-V and SCVMM
Microsoft has announced two new training and certification programs that align with their new virtualization products. In the news release Climbing the Ladder of Success with Microsoft Certification: New training and certification programs help IT professionals develop mastery of Microsoft technologies, Microsoft hints at the availability of the new certifications.
“… Jim Clark, senior product planner, and Per Farny, director of advanced training and certification, will be at Microsoft Tech-Ed 2008 in Orlando, Fla., this week to unveil two new training and certification programs from Microsoft Learning. Scheduled to begin later this year, the programs are designed to prime the pipeline of skilled workers and help companies maximize their technology investments.”
A general outline of how the curriculum will be be delivered is also discussed.
“The virtualization training will be delivered in a variety of virtual, distance learning, and instructor-led options that focus on the fundamentals of virtualization, the underlying principles of virtualization architecture and the specifics of Microsoft’s technology.”

VCDX announced – Advanced Certification for VMware Infrastructure Design
In the May 2008 edition of the VMware Partners email newsletter I received this week there is news of the official availability of the VMware Certified Design Expert certification or VCDX. From the email:
Advanced Certification for VMware Infrastructure Design
The VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) is an advanced certification developed for design architects of VMware enterprise deployments. There are four core validation components for achieving this certification.
- Must be certified as a VMware Certified Professional (VCP) on VMware Infrastructure 3
- Pass the VMware Enterprise Exam. This exam includes live lab items and will test a higher level of skill set than the VCP exam. Check out the blueprint for this exam.
- Pass the VMware Design Exam. This exam focuses on actual design and contains and situational questions
- Submit, present and defend a successful VMware Infrastructure design plan

VCP 3.5 Exam study materials
For those that are preparing to take the VCP Exam, be aware that questions on ESX 3.5 and VC 2.5 started appearing on the test as of March 1, 2008. VCP 3.5 Certification
The VCP Certification test will be changing in March. The announcement can be found on VMware’s Certification page:
VCP On VMware ESX Server 3.5 and Virtual Center 2.5 available March 1st, 2008
Current holders of the VCP for VMware Infrastructure 3 will not be required to refresh their certification for VMware ESX Server 3.5 and VMware VirtualCenter 2.5. Candidates who have taken one of the qualifying courses for the VCP on Virtual Infrastructure 3.0 and have not taken the test are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Beginning March 1st, 2008 questions on VMware ESX Server 3.5 and VMware Virtual Center 2.5 may appear on the exam. Candidates who have taken VMware ESX Server 3.0 and VMware Virtual Center 2.0 classes and DO NOT take the test prior to March 1st, 2008 will have the following options to learn about the new software versions:
- Self study and hands on experience.
- What’s New e-learning offerings from VMware
What’s New classes will not be required for those attempting the exam, but are recommended as an information source.

The original study guide was posted in May 2006. According to the forum thread at the link above, several corrections were made since then. The latest version of the guide available for download here is as of July 2007. The screenshot in this post shows a sample question and answer.
