what its vmware guest name is? That is, if I have a machine named
"master" and I clone it to "slave", can the two virtual machines
determine their names? I've looked at vmware tools and and the vix
API, and have poked around in /proc, /sys, and the the filesystem.

assuming when converted it's converted into an esx compatible
format(i.e. no ide disks etc..)
copy the vmdk to /vmimages (or another ext3 filesystem) then
vmkfstools -i converted.vmdk
/vmfs/volumes/vmfsvolume/newes xcompatible.vmdk
this will convert it to the proper mvfs3 filesystem format.. then

It's obviously not ESX, but could be either VMware Virtual Server/
Workstation...
btw, for network connections you use dhcp or manually configured
settings?

Re: VMware Workstation inside a virtual machine - Mon, 30 Jun 2008
If you want to test two instances of ESX each with its own set of VMs I'm
afraid you need two servers to run them on. You can't nest virtualisation
technologies.

Which variant of VMware are you using? It can't be ESX as you say the
host machine runs XP.

Re: Compatible VMs (VMwareServer 2 beta -> VMwareServer 1.x) - Fri, 27 Jun 2008
When you create a VM in Server 2 you're given the choice of using a
format compatible with previous versions or the latest format that Server
1 can't cope with.
So it's entirely down to how the VM was created.
