The Rock (and Roll)

Smash Mouth Rocks Treasure IslandIf Alcatraz is called “The Rock” then Treasure Island was “The Roll” for Wednesday’s VMWorld 2007 party.

First on stage was the Wonderbread 5. I believe this band was once a Jackson 5 tribute band that has now evolved into 5 white guys wearing afros that definitely know how to start the party!

Associatedentertainment.com describes this local San Francisco band best:

“With their tongue planted firmly in cheek, the Wonder Bread 5 posse fuses hip-hop, country-fied white-trash anthems, disco and hair metal, resulting in a high energy spectacle of fun, grooves and all the songs you love to sing…and sing loudly.”

Smash Mouth topped the evening off with all of their hits as well as some amazing Van Halen covers! The band started a multi song encore with a version of “Running with the Devil” that would have made even David Lee Roth jealous!

According to their web site Smash Mouth has a new album in stores and is also currently working on songs for an upcoming movie soundtrack. I will definitely be adding their newest CD to my collection.

Ah, quality time on a black beanbag

Posted on September 11th, 2007 in conf info, vmworld by Rich

This afternoon I spent some time on one of the black beanbags scattered about the conference. It was a nice rest for the feet. I’ve noticed several people around me catching some Zzz(s).

I have to say though, I wouldn’t have sat down if the sessions weren’t so difficult to get to. The Moscone Center is beautiful, but the logistics of getting around are frustrating. I guess there are too many attendees and the hallways and stairwells are just to narrow. The lines have been horribly long.

I tried to get to room 307 for example. You go up some stairs only to find 6 lines waiting for the people already in rooms 301- 310 to exit. The entrance to these rooms apparently are all in a very narrow corridor. I waited in line for 20 minutes and didn’t move so I gave up.

MS Server 2008 and VMM

Microsoft:

Server 2008 looks promising for virtualization. Comes in a command line only desktop ideal for VI - can be managed remotely via Virtual Machine Manager

System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 is the MS version of Vc2 and more:

  • Can consolidate physical servers to VMs (P2V) and import other VMs (V2V)
    • uses VSS to create new VM without interrupting source server - nice! ( I have done this on occasion manually)
    • can convert VMware VMs
  • Intelligent workload placement
    • MS calls feature “Intelligent Placement” - imagine that!
    • analyzes both VM and host workload along with business rules to determine placement
  • Rapid deployment and migration of VMs
    • can deploy and manage multiple VMs across multiple hosts
  • Central library
    • vm disks
    • iso files
    • templates
  • Reports and performance monitoring
    • use SQL server and SQL Reporting Services

Giants Game

Giants Game CollageI decided not to go to the Partner Day reception tonight and instead went to he D’Backs vs Giants game at AT&T Park. I didn’t really care who won, I just wanted to see some baseball in a new park. Since I am a Braves fan I couldn’t really get into the game. I left in the 7th inning.

When I left Barry Bonds had a double and a walk. It was interesting to listen to the fans around me when Bonds is at bat compared to when he is in the field. During his at bats they all cheer him and boo the opposing pitcher if he doesn’t throw strikes. When Barry is in Left Field the fans all seen to hold their breathe when the ball goes his way. A few times Bonds had to chase the ball into the corner or the gap and, when he casually loped after the ball, the fans screamed “run Barry!” with some frustration. Although the San Francisco fans have obviously enjoyed the home run record I bet they won’t be too disappointed when Bonds retires for good.

I created a Photos Page where you can watch photo slide shows from today. I’ll keep updating this page throughout the week.

The SF Marriott - home of Partner Day 2007Partner Day seems way more crowded this year. I guess it’s a problem VMware wants to have because it is a symptom of success, but my morning as an attendee has been unpleasant. Personally I have had the following problems:

  • Finding parking was tough
  • The registration area was very compact and the process was slower than expected.
  • The Marriott feels warm - this may be petty, but with this many people this safternoon may get worse !!
  • I could not get in the General Session. I was late because I had to take a conference call. When I got to the General Session I was told the auditorium was full and to goThe Moscone Center to an “overflow” room where there was a simulcast. When I saw that was full too I gave up. I went outside and took a break.

I also know that many people had registration problems. There was a special line for “handling problems”. One of my co-workers’ was told he was not registered, but he got it straightened out - except he can’t eat the conference lunch or got to the partner reception tonight.
