My experience of VMDR was not good, I actually decided to pull the plug after destroying and redeploying on a number of occasions. I know of other people who have had similar problems and who to have pulled the plug on VMDR as a reliable backup tool. I have since begun a trial of Veeam backup 4.1, at least it is actually capable of completing the backups I configure in it.

VMDR has a long way to go in my opinion, I just feel it was another feature rushed into service for the vSphere launch. I do hope it gets better eventually though, I did like the vCenter integration.

Great post Rich,

Not only VDR is easy to setup for small shops, the GUI navigation setup via web interface makes it really straight forward process. However, it does not compete with some high end backup products with more comfortable features like restore of single mailbox (even e-mail) functionality etc..

Integrated e-mail reporting after each successful job would be a nice feature too... -:)
