VIRTUMANIA Podcast Episode 1 – Virtualbox, Type 2 Hypervisors, and Security Nipples

VIRTUMANIA BLACK BKG 200X200I am proud to announce a new podcast I will be hosting on a weekly basis – VIRTUMANIA!

VIRTUMANIA is an Infosmack Production that will try to focus on the operational and administrative viewpoints of all things virtualization, so expect a different guest list of bloggers, architects, administrators, and consultants with each recording.

VIRTUMANIA episodes will be announced as new posts here on VM /ETC. Be sure to subscribe to the VM /ETC RSS feed in your favorite RSS reader or download the show each week from the podcast’s RSS feed. Of course, you can subscribe to the VIRTUMANIA podcast on iTunes. Finally, download or listen to each episode from the embedded player on the VM /ETC VIRTUMANIA Page.

I can’t thank Greg Knieriemen and Marc Farley enough for the patience, advice, and support necessary to get this podcast off the ground. For those that don’t already know, Greg and Marc host the already widely popular Infosmack podcast covering servers, storage, and virtualization news. Tapping into their insights and experiences while planning this podcast have been, and will continue to be invaluable to me. Special thanks to Marc for the Virtumania theme music and Greg for recording and post editing each episode.

    Interesting podcast. Couple of comments:

    1. KVM is also Type 2.
And it is interesting that people (Red Hat, Novell, etc) are moving away from Type 1 (Xen) to Type 2 (KVM) because PV is now a dirty word.

    2. The VirtualBox hypervisor can be used as a
    - Desktop product - this is what it is most known as.
    - Enterprise Desktop Server (Sun VDI) - run vm's on the server
    - and even as a Server Virt hypervisor - but it needs a mgmt tool.
Now doesn't Oracle have a mgmt tool?

    3. VirtualBox has evolved rapidly over last few years. And didn't Microsoft start on the desktop and then move to the datacenter?
  • VBoxFan,

Glad you enjoyed the podcast. Thanks for tieing the implied loose ends with
    your comment. :)
  • @dboftlp @storagenerve Thanks for the podcast support!

  • Rich, great first podcast. Some of the Java/Sun/Oracle/MySQL fear and doubt discussion is surely going to get some strong comments. ;)

For some of your listeners, here's a writeup on how to set up a headless ubuntu virtualbox environment to get started using virtualbox.

The Virtual Iron play was a way for oracle to help consolidate the Xen market. With Oracle a Xen shop, and Redhat moving to KVM, it made sense for oracle to acquire the good bits from Virtual Iron to support their efforts with the Xen hypervisor (oracle unbreakable being based on Redhat enterprise). Oh and btw, Sun's virtualization play (other than containers) is based on Xen as well.

Oracle has effectively consolidated all the Xen play in the market outside of Citrix.

@vseanclark Oracle is just the latest steward of Java. Forking is always possible when stewards act silly with Free software.
  • @Theronconrey, thanks for adding to the #VIRTUMANIA w/ the extra Oracle, Virtualbox and Java info!
  • Congrats Rich, looking forward to listening the podcast every week....carry on the good work!!!
