Hi, $.02 here...
We bought esXpress in 2007 for two reasons: 1) per-host licensing; 2) they were the only company to give us a reasonable non-profit discount.

I don't know if now having got bigger they would do #2 again. Support has been very good so far.

Renewals are not totally unreasonable, we upgraded to Enterprise last year before renewing to have some future savings.

Speed could be better but there's probably ways I can improve that.

The text-based frontend is actually BETTER than a GUI because it is faster and you can do everything off the keyboard and it is really actually a well-designed text GUI. They are however bowing to people's preferences for a graphical GUI and are moving more functions into the GUI.

I have also been told that the 4.x release will be out before year-end and I believe 4.x will also support ESXi as well as ESX. Veeam and the others all charge per-CPU, which IMNSHO is more expensive. We will also use vDR as well. Price is a big issue for SMBs, and price often outweighs features.
