VMware View 4 Screen Shots

Although VMware announced VMware View 4 earlier this week, the latest release of VMware’s VDI platform will not be available for download until November 19. Described as a “marketing announcement” on the pre release call I attended, this weeks news coincides with the availability of new documentation, videos, and information for those preparing to implement/upgrade as soon as the bits are generally available. This information can be obtained from the new VMware View 4 web site now.

Here is a gallery of View 4 screen shots for those that can’t wait until the 19th. These images were forwarded to bloggers by VMware after last week’s call. A few of the images show the configuration options for choosing the new PCoIP (PC over IP)  protocol when connecting with virtual desktops.

From the various blogs and social media conversations I’ve observed in the past few days the most common reaction has been general disappointment about the continued “experimental” support of Offline Desktop as well as similar experimental support for Windows 7. All indications are that this tag will not be lifted for Offline Desktop until a Client Hypervisor, also missing from this release, is officially announced.

There is quite a lot to be excited about in VMware View, however. Most importantly, View 4 is supported on vSphere 4. As previously mentioned, PCoIP promises greater performance and media rich capabilities for View users.

The following description of the features was taken from the press release linked above:

“VMware View 4 establishes a new desktop experience standard, capable of satisfying the broadest range of users – from the basic task worker to the designer, with a rich, high-quality user environment across the widest range of devices and networks. View 4 will deliver a complete desktop environment including:

  • VMware View with PC over IP (PCoIP) – New adaptive display protocol specifically developed for virtual desktop delivery dynamically detects device type, network connections and locations providing the optimal desktop experience for each unique user scenario. Only VMware View with PCoIP analyzes and optimizes for both hardware and software environments. A strong ecosystem of hardware and solution providers have announced support for PCoIP, enabling adoption and support of this key innovation.
  • VMware View Display – Multi-monitor, adaptive display support, resolution optimization for each monitor with an option to pivot and rotate the display output, supporting rich audio and video content with increased performance.
  • VMware View Direct – Seamless mapping from the virtual desktop to the end users device for locally attached peripherals through USB connection for increased productivity.
  • VMware View Printing – Users automatically discover, connect and print to locally attached printer without the need to install print drivers.  Delivers a high quality printing experience even over low bandwidth connections.
  • VMware View Unified Access – Continuous desktop availability with a single point of authentication for users to access – VMware View environments, Windows Terminal Servers, Blade PCs or even remote physical PCs.”

    Great...
but how is vmware with provisioning on disk drive space?
Can we use 1 golden image to roll out 1000 desktops and make them individual to users but still be able to update them all with an stand alone install of a program?
If I can't than vmware has lost. And If it cant stream them off to local desktops, what the heck are mobile users going to do?
  • Jabberwolf,

Yes you can, but that's not a function of vSphere Thin Provisioning.
That's actually handled by VMware View's Composer and it's use of
linked clones to a single template. The linked clones are delat disks
    of the tempate.

If thats the case then I'm all game !!!
The problem before was with the provisioning, there was much of a good plan on views. And if this from Composer can stream down to desktops, then that definitely will be competition for Desktop.
