Special Hyper9 VMM Beta Program Perks Available For VM /ETC Readers

Monitor and Manage VMs on the Go with Virtualization Mobile Manager (VMM) now available in beta from Hyper9. VMM Sound familiar? That’s because Andrew Kutz previously released VMM on his lostcreations.com web site before he joined the Hyper9 team and became responsible for H9Labs. However, this latest version has broadened it’s support to include not only VMware ESX and ESXi, but also VMware Server, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer 5. If I am not mistaken, that makes VMM the first multi vendor virtualization management tool in existence (mobile phone or otherwise) that can administer and monitor guests on all the major platforms.

The VMM beta is now available to the entire virtualization universe at the link above, but Hyper9 has a special offer for VM /ETC readers that comes with some exclusive perks:

  • automatic entry to win a mobile device in a contest starting in June
  • a limited edition Hyper9 t-shirt (in exchange for some VMM feedback)
  • 50% discount should you choose to purchase

Be one of the first 15 readers to comment on this post to take advantage of this invitation. Be sure to use a valid email address so that Hyper9 can contact you about the beta download, your shirt, and more.

What is VMM? Hyper9 describes the product and it’s features as follows:

VMM offers administrators remote monitoring and support – browser-based management that works on a wide variety of mobile devices.  Developed by virtualization infrastructure expert Andrew Kutz, VMM offers:

Features

  • Monitor and manage on the go
  • Monitor multiple host and VM performance stats (CPU, Memory)
  • Understand datacenter health

Mobile

  • Monitor Host and VM Performance Statistics (CPU, Memory)
  • Control VMs and Take Action on the Go (start, stop, pause, reset, disable network)
  • Optimized for Mobile Devices (Apple iPhone, Blackberry, Google Android and Windows Mobile Devices)

Supported Hypervisors

  • VMware Server 2
  • VMware Infrastructure 3.5 Hosts (VMware ESX 3.5, ESXi 3.5, VirtualCenter 2.5)
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Citrix XenServer 5

Supported Platforms

  • VMM is hosted as an Apache Tomcat Web application
  • Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X

Hyper9 also has a working demo of the full and lite web interfaces (screen shot at the start of this post). Go here for demo access instructions.

I wonder if Hyper9 will eventually combine the mobile phone functionality that VMM provides with it’s flagship search based management, monitoring, and reporting tool? Sounds like a great roadmap to me, but I am just speculating.

  • Hi,
I hope you still have 3 beta invitation.
I am really looking for this solution to provide mobile management to our customer.

    Regards,

Oh Crud... looks like I missed out on this... unless one of you chaps would like to share =)

We are actively looking for a solution right now, so this would be great to have and test right now.

    Anyone want to share?

  • VMVic,

You are good. Although there are 15 comments a couple are from the same person, one from is from me, and one is from the VMM creator. I'll get your info to Hyper9 later today. I still have 3 beta invites left

I'm definitely interested in the VMM beta. I've been a real fan of Andrew Kutz and lost creations. The storage VMotion gui they created is a great and reliable tool and I would expect the same when VMM becomes final.
  • I have 10 different people (besides VMM's creator AKutz and BHeavner 2nd post), so I have 5 VMM beta invitations left. Sending info on the first 10 to Hyper9.
  • Dracolith
Full VM management across all platforms would be very interesting. I'd
certainly like to see the beta.

    Sign me up!
  • Let's see if I'm lucky commenter #10 to get an invitation to give this a run through on both VI 3.5 and VI 4.0
  • Ryan Melton
Maybe I missed something. How can you use VMM when you can only access to your VI using a VPN connection to the data center network??
  • Ryan,

The VMM is actually a web interface, so it can be published externally. Also check out my previous post about VMware's vCMA for some other ideas about providing mobile admin access to VI - http://vmetc.com/2009/03/26/how-will-admins-pro...

    Rich,
Thanks for filling in that gap.
  • Bruce Heavner (again)
Re-posting - I just went to their website, and it looks like a neat product. I've never heard of hyper9 before - I'd like to see how the monitoring parts compare with typical vizioncore and veeam type of products - but this looks like it's worth taking a good look. It looks like a good management tool.

This looks very interesting. To be honest, it's the first I'd heard of mobile monitoring - I just set up 5 other monitoring products for a client to evaluate in their environment, this might make a good sixth...
Also, I like wearing vendor shirts... :)
  • Jonathan Gaikwad
I'd definitely love to give this a go :)
  • James Kamienski
    Pick me! Pick me!

    No, really....

Actually it looks pretty interesting especially since it can be used for multiple virtualization platforms. Hopefully we can get a little competition going between this and VMware's offering too.

Wondering what the "mobile device" might be too... *8)

It would be great to see the new features now that the product has moved into a commercial setting. I would love to run and comment on the beta since I'm already looking at VMware's mobile manager and RoveMobile's virtualization management pieces.
  • Wow, Mobile administration of my Virtual environment. Now I am glad I bought the Touch Pro, with it's VGA screen, I will be able to use this application and avoid being at my desk all day.

We have a mix of Hypervisors and administrative tools but this should be interesting.

    You rock!
  • Wow that sounds really great (thanks for sharing Rich!). I really like the fact that as a consultant I can master a single mobile management console and then be able to implement it for clients no matter which of the big 3 they've chosen to use as their hypervisor.

Hoping there is some basic search functionality because scrolling through a few hundred (or thousand) VMs trying to find the one you want on a mobile phone could be brutal. ;)

I'll let the twitterverse (@astorrs) know what I think of the beta once I get a chance to play.
  • Andrew,

Great name! Search is definitely on the roadmap. Right now though the preferred way to limit what VMs come back is to use an account that can only see a subset of VMs.
