VM /ETC maintenance scheduled for 12.13.08 at 10 pm EST

updated 12.14.08 – VM /ETC was successfully updated to WordPress 2.7! If you notice anything stranger than normal or broken please leave me a comment or send me an email. Thanks, Rich

My Change Control Request to take VM /ETC down for maintenance on 12.13.08 (today) in order to upgrade to WordPress version 2.7 has been reluctantly approved by the Change Control Board. It was not an easy task convincing the Board to allow this upgrade. The Change Control Board is just me, of course! ;)

VM /ETC will experience periods of temporary unavailability from 10 pm to 11 pm EST tonight. Thanks for your patience during this time period, and thanks for reading VM /ETC.

Who approved this? You need business line sign off. Sorry to throw some last minute bureaucracy at you but management has sent your CR back to arbitrate status due to business processing that will be occurring tonight (me reading your blog). The DBAs are also running their hot backups during that time. 4am maintenance would work better for us.

    Jason, Cody, Eric,

After snapping out of the bureaucratic flashback induced by your comments, I decided the concerns you’ve expressed for the business units that depend on vmetc.com are valid, and I have resubmitted the CR for the 4 am timeframe. However, the resubmitted form includes adequate post-upgrade testing procedures overlooked on the first draft. I have volunteered all of you to participate in verifying the site is back online and all services are returned to normal. I anticipate this testing will begin approximately at 4:15 am EST. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Or, we can stick to the original plan and do the upgrade at 10 pm! :P

Of course your CR still doesn’t meet the required 1-2 week lead time for scheduling unless this is an emergency change request to address issues but based on your description this just sounds like feature enhancements.

Don’t worry, I’ve already gone above your head on this and am having sidebar email conversations with your managers.

Good luck with the upgrade. Let us know how it goes (unless vmetc.com doesn’t show up after 2200 hours) – I’m preparing for a 2.7 upgrade on VMtoday.com.
