VMware changes product names

John Troyer has announced that the VMware website has been updated to reflect new product line names first introduced back in September at VMworld 2008. In the VMTN post Do they smell as sweet? New product line names: vCenter, View, John explains that the VirtualCenter and VDM products have are now referred to as vCenter and VMware View. Several VC add ons such as Update Manager and Converter are included along with Site Recovery Manager (SRM), Lab Manager, Lifecycle Manager, and even the file system VMFS now have slightly new names.

John provides a complete list of all products impacted by the name change which I have copied here.

VMware vCenter
Brand name for all infrastructure and application management products from VMware

VMware VirtualCenter ? VMware vCenter Server
The central management product for VMware Infrastructure

VMware Lifecycle Manager ? VMware vCenter Lifecycle Manager
Workflow automation product for creation, deployment and decommissioning of virtual machines

VMware Converter ? VMware vCenter Converter (for the version integrated into vCenter)
VMware vCenter Converter Standalone (for the separately downloadable version); comes in two flavors: Enterprise and Starter
Physical to virtual (P2V) conversion product

VMware Lab Manager ? VMware vCenter Lab Manager
Automation product for application development environments

Automation product for application staging and deployment environments

  • I'm biased since I work for VMware but I like the new names. It at least tells people what they fall under. Of course I used to call the products by their street name (ESX instead of VMware ESX Server) so I'll probably continue to get yelled at by marketing with the new, longer names. :)

    I like the new names too. Though now we are in a scramble trying to figure out what our VDM 2.0 license covers as far as VDMView. And vSales is upwards of an hour long wait. I am really enjoying the new features though! (In the evaluation as our 2.0 key will not plug into 3.0/view)
