VMware’s vCloud Iniatives. The vision for the next 10 years

Paul Maritz spoke during the opening General Session of Partner Day Monday morning and provided a better understanding about Vmware’s vCloud initiative and the concept of evolving it’s current VI 3.5 products into the VDC-OS of the future announced Sunday night. Paul is scheduled to expand on this vision in greater detail during Tuesday’s VMworld 2008 kick off Key Note Session, but here is a high level outline of my understanding of Paul’s talk.

VMware’s vision for the Next 10 years is focused on 3 key initiatives:

  1. The Internal Cloud – efficient use of applications and hardware
    • The VDC-OS will create the Internal Cloud by providing a framework for infrastructure vServices and application vServices to form a new software platform.
    • Applications must evolve into vApps, or a collection of virtual appliances.
    • VMware needs the help of it’s technology partners to transform current virtual infrastructure into the vCloud
  2. Scale outside the Firewall – federation with the cloud
    • Once applications are readily available as vApps, the applications loads can be hosted or provided by external service provider partners running the VDC-OS.
    • There are already over 100 service provider partners already today. Two of the big names mentioned were Verizon and Sunguard
  3. People and Info-centric – the desktop delimma
    • The vCloud will enable desktops to follow users
    • Paul mentioned the concept of installing an application to a person and not a computer
    • future VDI technologies will enable an offline desktop that can be downloaded to a user’s physical computer and then replicate changes back to the cloud.
    • A Universal vClient would enable a virtual desktop to be loaded on to any operating system or even a bare metal system.
    • This requires the combination of both client side and server side virtualization technologies (VMware ESX and VirtualCenter working to manage Workstation and Fusion VMs for example)

I plan to be live blogging from the opening Keynote Session session so look for more information then.
