I believe it may have something to do with the vm-late module that loads during boot. We had an issue where all of our esx hosts began failing to connect to our ipsan after configuring the iscsi software initiator on a new host. We did an interactive reboot (press i when modules start loading)and stopped it from loading (looks like vm-late has to do with iscsi and nfs; anyone confirm?) but then we could not open a console through vi client to any box and the client would freeze. We then disabled the iscsi initiator, rebooted the server and let vm-late reload. After this, opening guest consoles were successful. I cannot explain why, but I hope this can help someone out there if they try it.

If you are accessing the console via VI client you also need ports 901 and 902 open

Does anyone ever have the issue where that line added to the /etc/vmware/config goes away after rebooting? For some reason that seems to be happening to us. I've saved the file, but after reboot the line I added is gone.
