Things that make you go hmmmm – May 2, 2008

Just one entry this week. Take a side. Were we better off with the virtualization available 20 years ago, or are we better off today? Has it even changed at all? Justify the current technologies in the modern data center.

Why Did We Just Throw Away The Last 20 Years?
from nerds-central.blogspot.com

“Our current approach to virtualization is so numb-brained it makes me want to vomit. We write a program to pretend to be hardware so that we can run an operating system designed to run on real hardware as a virtual machine. Why in all creation do such a thing? Why pretend to be hardware? Maybe for testing – that is about it. All other virtualization is just about licensing and stupidity.

If you don’t believe me – try to think of a similar situation anywhere else in human endeavour (other than for testing). Bet you cannot! Do we have jumbo-jets flying around stuffed full a light aircraft! Where are the ocean liners with speed boats floating around inside (apart from in ‘Deep Rising’). Oh – here is one example: when my daughter was three we had a pretend house in her bedroom. Look – a pretend house inside a house. So that is it – virtualization makes sense if you are three!”

Help me explain the benefits of modern virtualization to this colleague.
