Things that make you go hmmmm – April 11, 2008
This week’s edition could be called “a thing that makes you go hmmm” since I only have a single blog post linked. This post is about why one particular blogger thinks Vista is better than Mac OS X, and how he uses virtualization as one of his arguing points. Just to set the record straight, I do not run Vista on any of my work or personal systems and I do not own a Mac. However, I do know enough about both operating systems and virtualization to say “hmmmm”.
Five reasons why Vista beats Mac OS X
by Preston Galla at blogs.computerworld.com
“Mac OS X is a very pretty operating system, but beauty runs only skin deep. An operating system by itself is a poor thing — it’s the applications that run on top of it that matter. And here’s where Mac OS X falls short. It can’t run much common software, including enterprise applications and games.
Virtualization software like Parallels Desktop for Mac won’t solve the problem. Parallels can’t run even the most basic Vista games such as FreeCell, Hearts, Pinball, Solitaire and Minesweeper, because it doesn’t support DirectX 9. And virtualization software creates big problems for enterprises with regard to volume licensing, technical support, creating standard enterprisewide images and so on. So it’s no good for running enterprise applications either. Vista beats OS X here, hands down.”

Read the comments – too many users have already said everything I can possibly think of to add, and, frankly, it’s very entertaining.
After you are done there check out the YouTube videos below. I’ll let these videos do the talking for me.
Unity in VMware Fusion for Mac OS X
15 short Ads Mac vs PC
I want to thank John Troyer at VMTN for pointing me to this week’s post. John also just so happened to announce a VMware Fusion contest to win a Macbook Air this week as well. (hmmmm!
) As I mentioned in my first edition of this series, if you find articles or posts that are entertaining, humorous, or that just make you scratch your head then please let me know about them.
Also, in case you were wondering, my personal preference of operating systems has recently shifted from Windows to Linux. I have standardized 2 of my 3 home systems on Ubuntu 7.10, and the third one is still Windows XP only because my wife needs MS Office. I tried to get her to use Open Office, and she was even opened minded about the switch. Unfortunately, after about 3 weeks she had to have Office back. She is so familiar with Office that she works with keyboard shortcuts to be quicker, and some of her newsletters and fliers did not open with the same formatting. I bring this up because VMware Workstation 6.5 Beta 1 with Unity is available for download. That means that soon I can finally migrate my wife’s PC to Linux too, and with VMware Workstation I can provide her a VM to run MS Office.
The image to the right shows Workstation 6.5 Beta 1 running on Slackware. Click on it for a larger version. This image came from http://polishlinux.org/apps/vmware-workstation-65-beta-1-with-unity-support/. Check out that post for more screen shots and instructions for enabling Unity on Linux.
