Things that make you go hmmmm – March 28, 2008

AHallIt is a saying made famous by former talk show host and comedian Arsenio Hall. It is the title of a C + C Music Factory dance hit. Now “Things that make you go hmmmm” will be a series of posts on VM /ETC that provide links and news related to virtualization, but that’s humorous, strange, or entertaining in nature. I’ll try to collect links and post them every Friday. Help me out if you find something that makes you go “hmmmm”.

So, without any further delay, pump your fist and say “Woof! Woof! Woof!” for the first set of links:

Monday Morning Fun: Sinbad Loves Fusion

From the VMware.com/teamfusion site

“The comedian Sinbad stopped by our booth, and when I struck up a conversation with him, I was surprised to find out that not only is he a total Mac-nut, he’s also a VMware Fusion user.

Check out the post for a video of Sinbad talking about using Fusion “only when he has to run Windows.”

Happy new version, VMware!

from Schley Andrew Kutz over at servervirtualization.blogs.techtarget.com:

“Now I don’t mind owning up to my bad memory, but here’s the thing – you have sooo many versions! Most people just have one version per year, you have at least five. There’s the version for VMware Infrastructure (VI), currently at 3.5. ESX is already 3.5 versions old, and ESX 3i has its own version too. Then there is the VirtualCenter and the VI client at 2.5. VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) is straggling behind at 1.1. I think the VI SDK is also 2.5 versions old, but with the VI Perl Toolkit at version 1.5 and the VI Toolkit (for Windows) in beta, it is hard to keep up.”

Read the whole post for the rest of the funny, sarcastic rant. Talking about having a hard time remembering, servervirtualizations’s blog url will definitely wear your mind out ….

VMware Screws USA, to Invest $100m in India

From Rekha at SearchIndia.com

“Virtualization software house VMware joined the hordes of U.S. corporations that are screwing American workers with its just-announced plans to boost research and development operations in India through an investment of $100 million.”

What else can I say? Read the whole post!

Hyperbole about Hyper-V?

by RossB over at opsamericas.com

“Microsoft has released a feature-complete version of Hyper-V, their new virtualization technology, and detailed the supported operating systems that can be virtualized:

  • Windows Server 2003 SP2
  • Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1
  • Windows Vista SP1 (x86)
  • and Windows XP SP3 (x86)

For some reason this list has caused some of the people in the Linux community to protest, basically stating that it’s not enough for them to feel that Novell is being eaten by the “Borg”, but inexplicably that they want to be tasty snacks too. Essentially they are cranky that Microsoft isn’t supporting more versions of Linux than just Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise on Hyper-V.”

He goes on to point out that a Microsoft and Novell support partnership by itself was a significant miracle, and that it’s funny to see Linux users complaining about being left out by a vendor they want nothing to do with usually. Read the blog for more, and check out the “to protest” link for what I assume was RossB’s inspiration.

Why Novell is Bad for Linux: Reason #100 (Virtualisationovell-only)

from boycottnovell.com by Roy Schestowitz :

“Another good example of Novell’s harmful role involved virtualisation. We have seen this coming for a long time and mentioned Hyper-V’s discrimination factor in the past [1, 2]. To an extent, XenSource (Citrix) plays a similar role [1, 2].”

This is a counter-point example to the post above, and a site dedicated to pointing out why Microsoft and Novell are bad news together. Check it out.
