Comparison of commercial virtualization features
IT20.info has created a good multi vendor virtual infrastructure feature comparison which can be found at Virtual Infrastructure products: features comparison.
What distinguishes this table from Wikipedia’s comparison is that it is focused only on hardware virtualization solutions that are the most relevant in the market today. The author has done a great job weeding out all the less known vendors and allows you to more easily compare VMware vs Microsoft vs Virtual Iron vs Citrix vs Xen.
John Troyer from VMTN Blog wrote about this matrix in his Virtual Technology Comparison post and brings up a great point:
“And this should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: although this is interesting in a technical curiosity sort of way, you shouldn’t base any purchasing decisions on something like this. A check mark doesn’t tell you how a feature was implemented or how well it works, and a list of features doesn’t tell you about how a solution will fit your business needs.”
To add to John’s point, feature comparisons are the starting point for further research and hopefully technology pilots. Ask your architects and engineers to examine not only the features, but also the logistics of implementation and the challenge of ongoing support.
