General Session 09.12.07 – Cisco VFrame

Notes from the General Session:

John Chambers – CEO – Cisco

VMWorld General Session 09.12.07John talked about his vision of networking / Internet / business strategy changes for IT infrastructure and business unit decision making.

How do we enable employee productivity and customer satisfaction using virtualization / collaboration?

Internet Phase 1 – unprecedented productivity in 1990s

  • orders over internet
  • customer self service

Internet Phase 2 – Web 2.0 – we are here now

  • New services /support
  • new sales model
  • internal wikis / i-zone
  • aquisition model = 8 days vs 45 days
  • command / control / collaboration / teamwork enabled by virtualization

Collaboration will be driver for Web 2.0 and second wave of productivity and Innovation
web services will provide replay of technology growth of the ’90s – using technology like

  • wikis
  • forums
  • facebooks
  • u tube

Consumer will drive business

Why Now? will it go flat as expected?

Cisco on Cisco changes in last 9 months

  • sales – telepresence
  • engineering – i-zone
  • acquisitions – webex
  • marketing – customer-online experience
  • finance – fcln
  • legal – online collab

Groups should not work in Silos

  • members should work in groups of reps from engineering, mktg, fin, etc to make decisions
  • Power to go to a central repository of people, data, and process to quickly research and make decisions
  • Significant changes required – making decisions by councils and not by following CEOs direction. painful transistion but ultimately enables unprecendented speed of business.

Any device, mode, network, time, place, to any content … enabled by IT / Network

Datacenter needs to evolve again: now to virtualized

Product Demo – Cisco Virtual Datacenter

Cisco VFrame

  • uses automated deployment of VMs as needed – uses VCenter API
  • reporting on resources
  • dynamic resource allocation to balance the load – monitor system performance to determine if new VMs are needed
